Kahlan’s labor had started hours ago and Richard couldn’t bear to see his wife in so much pain.  She had his hand in a death grip as the midwife urged her to push, to bring her daughter into the world.  She was exhausted but she wasn’t giving up.  She put all her strength into giving her daughter life.  Richard kept encouraging her as she pushed until the blissful sound of their daughter’s cries filled her ears.  She collapsed onto the pillows, her body giving out on her as the midwife cut the cord and cleaned her daughter.

“You did it, Kahlan.” Richard pressed a kiss to her sweat soaked temple before taking his daughter from the midwife and sitting next to Kahlan, leaning her against his chest.  “She is perfect.”

Kahlan opened her eyes and looked at the little bundle in Richard’s arms.  She was so small and she could already see the blend of hers and Richard’s features in their daughter’s tiny face.  The little tufts of dark brown hair on her head that was so much like her own. “Can I?”  She held out her arms to him, wanting him to give her their daughter.

“Of course.  She is yours.”  He placed the small girl in her arms as the midwife left the room to give the new family some privacy.

“She is so perfect.  She is like an angel.”  She smiled as she looked at her daughters tiny ears, making sure there were two before picking up a tiny delicate hand and counting her fingers.

“Like an angel?”  Richard repeated Kahlan’s words to her as a light went on.  He finally knew what they should call their daughter.  “Evangeline.”

“What?”  Kahlan didn’t bother looking up from the child in her arms, she knew he had heard her and had no intention of looking away from her daughter.  She had never thought she would have a child with the man she loved but now she was holding the proof in her arms, that their love is stronger than her magic.

“I think I know what we should name her.”

That caught her attention and she stopped playing with her daughters tiny fingers and looked at him.  “What do you think?”

“Evangeline.  It means ‘like an angel’.  She is our little angel so I thought it fits.  Especially that was one of the things you said when I handed her to you.”

She smiled at him as their daughter started fussing.  “That’s a perfect name.  Evangeline.” She tested it out, letting the name slip from her tongue.  “Evangeline Rahl.”  She smiled again and shifted Evangeline in her arms.  “I think she is hungry.  Are you hungry, Eva?”

Richard smiled when Kahlan called her Eva.  He hadn’t thought of a nickname but it just seemed to fit her.  He watched as Kahlan adjusted her nightgown so she could feed their daughter for the very first time.  As Eva fussed she opened her eyes and he was speechless.  That little baby who, in his opinion looked just like Kahlan was staring up at them with deep chocolate eyes.  His eyes.  He was captivated.  He couldn’t believe that this child in Kahlan’s arms was just as much part of him as she was part of her.

He watched as Eva’s tiny lips latched on to Kahlan’s breast, seeking out the nourishment that only she could provide.  It warmed his heart seeing the way Kahlan instinctively was becoming more and more maternal with every second.  He never thought his heart could have been filled with so much love but now that Eva has joined his life he was proven wrong.  His heart was bursting with the love he felt for the two most important women in his life.

Kahlan loved this.  The connection she was making with her daughter was beyond anything she had ever dreamed and when the tiny girl opened her eyes her heart had nearly stopped.  She had gotten her wish.  Their daughter had his warm brown eyes.  She never thought her life would be as perfect as it was in that moment.

They were content to just watch their daughter feed.  She had confessed them both from the moment she took her first breath, she had stolen their hearts and they didn’t want them back.  It wasn’t long before Eva was drifting off, her tiny mouth releasing its hold on her mother’s breast.  Kahlan started singing to her daughter as she fell asleep, her tiny body stretching out slightly, her delicate hand curling up and resting under her chin, one of her adorably tiny feet poking out of the soft pink blanket she was wrapped in.

Kahlan didn’t notice the little escaped foot but Richard did.  He let his thumb brush along her tiny foot, hardly believing that her foot was smaller than his thumb, the teeny toes were what really fascinated him though.  He couldn’t believe that anything could be so small.  He didn’t even realize he was doing it but he counted her toes, just to make sure they were all there, letting his finger brush over each one as he counted it.

Kahlan hadn’t realized what Richard was doing until he spoke.  “How is it possible for something to be so small?”  He had his daughter’s big toe in between his index and forefinger.

“I don’t know Richard.  I really don’t.”  She nestled her head in the crook of his neck as she watched him with their daughter.

He took Eva’s delicate little foot in his hand, in complete awe at how tiny it looked nestled in the palm of his hand.  He just couldn’t believe how small she was.  He lifted his hand just a little and kissed the tips of his daughter’s teeny little toes.

Kahlan couldn’t help but smile as she watched Richard with their daughter, laughing lightly when he kissed Eva’s little toes.  Even though her exhaustion was catching up with her she couldn’t help it.  She couldn’t peel her eyes away from her family.  They were perfect.

Richard noticed Kahlan’s eyelids drooping after kissing Eva’s little toes again and letting go of her teeny foot.  “Get some rest, Kahlan.”  He kissed her temple again and scooped a sleeping Eva out of her arms.  He held his daughter to his chest as helped Kahlan get comfortable.  “Sleep while you have the chance.  I’m sure she will be awake and hungry again in a few hours.”

Kahlan laughed lightly as her eyelids continued to droop.  “I love you both.”  She placed a light kiss to her daughter’s head before succumbing to sleep.

Richard just watched them for awhile, the two most important women in his life sleeping, Eva in his arms and Kahlan right next to him.  They looked so peaceful.  He just wished that every moment could be like this.  He was happier than he ever thought he could be and he was sure it was only the beginning.  They were a family now and would always make each other happy – now and forever.
