For as long as he could remember he had been jealous.  His father loved his younger brother more from the very beginning.  As a child he didn’t understand but now it didn’t matter.  He had destroyed his father.  He was no longer at threat.  Richard was defeated as well.  There was nothing stopping him anymore.

The only thing left was the confessor.  Kahlan was alone now.  All her friends and family gone, he hoped she would see him for what he was and not simply hate her for what he has done.  As much as she was a victory, claiming his brother’s woman, he didn’t take as much pleasure in it as he thought he would.  He had hoped to treat her like the nothing he originally thought her of, just another way to torment his brother but he couldn’t, the way she emanated authority and grace even when defeated and captured.  It captivated him.  He couldn’t treat her as less than a queen if he wanted to.  She deserved it.

For a long time he had been captivated by the power of confession and now he was captivated by her.  He wouldn’t change it for the world.  Darken had never felt like this about anyone but he was sure.  He was falling in love with Kahlan Amnell.  He just hoped she could learn to love him back.

Kahlan couldn’t understand why he was treating her so well.  The only thing reason she could come up with was that he wanted to lull her into a sense of security before finally killing her.  This was just so not like him.  For some reason it almost seemed like he was attempting to woo her and despite the struggle she had with herself about it, she liked it.  Part of her buried deep inside could almost see her falling for his charms.

Kahlan didn’t know how it was possible to forget everything he had done and feel like this, but she did.  It both worried and excited her.  Despite her confusion she was looking forward to this arrangement. If not to bring Richard back to this time then to let her curiousity take flight.  She needed to know if this was all a manipulation or if Darken truly cared for her.

She needed something to focus on and that was it.  She needed something to focus on and this was it.  This was the puzzle she was going to solve.  Kahlan was going to unlock the mysteries of Darken Rahl’s emotions even if it cost her life and freedom.  She just needed to know.  She had to unlock the secrets behind his emotions.  It seemed weird to her that he would show emotions.  Kahlan had always imagined him so could and heartless however she was slowly learning that wasn’t the case.  It just took time for her to see the truth.
