Disclaimer: I don't own them. I just like to make them do my bidding.
It was the last thing he had ever expected. After fighting thousands of banelings and D’Harans he never expected to be on bed rest all because of a pulled muscle. He couldn’t help but laugh at the situation that had gotten them into this mess to begin with. Kahlan had tripped on a root while they were making their way to meet up with Zedd and Cara in the next town, causing her to twist her ankle. She had told him it didn’t hurt and she was fine but he wouldn’t listen to her. Before she knew it he was carrying her. Everything had been fine; like it always was when he carried her until she shifted in his arms the same time he took a step, sending them both tumbling. Richard twisted his body to keep Kahlan from getting hurt but pulled a muscle in his lower back in the process.
Kahlan had been horrified that she had hurt him, even though he insisted it wasn’t her fault. She had insisted that he rest and let her take care of him. He was never able to deny Kahlan anything so he did as he was told, laying on his bed roll after she set it out for him, watching her as she went about doing all the camp chores, starting the fire and making dinner.
She looked so beautiful in the fire light. The slight chill in the air only making him want to hold her and keep her warm, even though he knew she would never allow it. She wanted him resting. He was relatively comfortable with the blankets wrapped around him as he lay there. He wasn’t very cold but Kahlan had made sure he was warm enough before going to work on the fire.
“Are you cold Kahlan?”
She just smiled at his concern as she shook her head slightly before getting back to preparing something over the fire. He watched her for a few more minutes, unable to resist her captivating beauty. After some time he closed his eyes, only to open them when he smelled something he didn’t think he would smell in the middle of the woods. “Is that hot chocolate?”
She turned and smiled at him while digging through her pack for a mug. “Yes it is.”
He was stunned. He had no idea how she had managed to make hot chocolate while they were in the middle of nowhere. “How?”
“I bought it the last time we stopped for supplies. I know you like it so I thought I would surprise you.”
Richard couldn’t help but smile at her thoughtfulness, getting this special treat for them just because she knows he likes it. He made a move to sit up, ignoring the slight pain in his lower back but before he knew it she was next to him, her hands on his shoulders, pushing him back down. “No Richard. I told you to rest. Lay there like I told you too and don’t move.”
“Kahlan, I can handle this. Besides, I can’t drink that while lying down.”
She never took her eyes off of him as she reached for the mug of warm liquid. She couldn’t help but smile at the way he watched her. She held the mug in her hands, watching him with a playful gleam in her eye. “I think you can drink while lying down.”
He looked at her curiously when she said this, his lips turning up into a half smile at the look in her eyes. “How?”
“Give me a few minutes and then I’ll show you.”
Again his brown eyes were sparkling with curiosity at her words but he said nothing. He knew she would never tell him so there was no point in trying to get it out of her. She had her mind set on something there is no way to get around it. He would have to wait.
He lay there for a few minutes just watching her as she smiled at him. Obviously what she had planned was making her happy. After awhile he watched as she lifted the mug to her lips, blowing on the warm liquid, cooling it so she wouldn’t burn herself. He couldn’t take his eyes off her as she smiled over the mug. He couldn’t see her smiling but he knew she was the way her face lit up was a dead giveaway.
“Ready Richard?”
“If you aren’t going to tell me then I guess I have to be.”
She lowered the mug just enough so he could see her smirk. “I really think you will enjoy this.” She shifted so she was straddling his legs, sitting on his thighs and smiling down at him, the playfulness obvious in her eyes. Then she took a sip of the hot chocolate before setting the mug to the side, savoring the flavor as he watched her.
He could tell she hadn’t swallowed but just as he was opening his mouth to ask her what she was doing, she kissed him, letting the warm coco trickle from her mouth into his. They kissed until all of the liquid had drained into Richard’s mouth, he swallowed and then they kissed more. Their tongues dancing, savoring the sweet flavor of the chocolate mixed with the unique flavor of the one they love more than life itself.
When Kahlan finally broke the kiss he smiled up at her. Every time he thought it was impossible to love her more than he already did, she managed to prove him wrong. He couldn’t believe the way she made him feel. “You’re right, Kahlan. I did enjoy that, however I hope I am going to get more hot chocolate than just that little bit.”
“You want more,” she said with a smirk, “I’ll let you have more.” She winked at him as she took another sip of the hot chocolate.
He opened his mouth slightly, fully expecting Kahlan to lean forward and kiss him again, delivering him but instead she swallowed, taunting him with the promise of his sweet treat as he watched her swallow.
“I thought you said I could have some more?”
She smiled at him, a mischievous glint in her eye. “We have to be fair about this. You got some, then I got some, now you can have some more.”
Kahlan took another sip of the hot chocolate, leaning down and kissing him almost instantly. He loved the way she was taking care of him, letting the liquid trickle into his mouth as they kissed over and over again, the flavor of the chocolate making the kisses that much sweeter. They kept up this pattern until the mug was empty and lying forgotten on the ground beside them. They kissed each other breathless over and over until Kahlan knew they had to stop. With Richard’s back pulled he was in no condition to continue what she had started. She pulled back, hating that she had started something that they couldn’t finish tonight but it had been the only way for him to drink. She knew it wasn’t exactly true but she didn’t care. She had wanted to kiss him like that, to do that for him. She had wanted to help him by trickling the coco into his mouth. “Richard…”
“I know Kahlan. You don’t have to tell me. I knew you would stop us.” He was quiet for a minute before he started to chuckle.
Kahlan just shook her head and smiled as she climbed off his thighs. She wishes she didn’t have to stop but she knew both her powers and his injury prevented it.
“It’s not your fault. Besides, if I would have known pulling a muscle would get this reaction I would have done it a long time ago.”
She couldn’t help but laugh at that, backhanding him lightly as if to reprimand him for even thinking such thoughts.
“All I know,” he continued when her laughter had died down, “next time you get hurt we are switching places.” He reached up, pulling her down and connecting their lips in a lazy kiss, the remainder of the flavor on her lips giving him reason to believe that he would never look at hot chocolate the same way again. He couldn’t be happier about it. From now on it would always remind him of the woman who holds his heart.
