Author's Notes: For the purpose of this fic, the episode 'Torn' takes place IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING the episode 'Extinction', however Renn isn't there to tell Richard what was in Darken's mind. This fic follows canon up until 'Extinction' with the exception that 'Torn' is no longer episode eleven. I owe a LOT of inspiration for this fic to

“They have been gone too long,” Cara said as she paced around the camp. She was starting to worry something had happened to Richard or Kahlan.
“Don’t worry, Cara.” Rahl said as he very obviously watched Kahlan walk off into the forest, his eyes fixed on her swaying hips. Spirits that woman knew how to tease him. “I’m sure my brother will be back soon enough.”
“He better.” She grumbled.
Just then a man wandered into the clearing, his focus clearly on Zedd. “Are you Zeddicus Zul Zorander?” He asked taking a tentative step forward. When Zedd nodded he continued. “The Seeker sent me to find you.” The man held out a simple gold ring and offered it to Zedd.
Darken had no interest in this man or what he wanted with Zedd so he slowly started to slip out of camp, heading in the direction Kahlan had disappeared. He followed the sound of water running over rocks. He quietly made his way through the forest getting closer and closer to the source.
He grew closer and closer to the sound of the water, coming to a stop at the tree line, his eyes glued on Kahlan as she knelt at the edge of the river filling her water skein. “Need some help?” He asked causally as he knelt next to her to fill his own water skein.
“No I’m fine, Lord Rahl.” She huffed, brushing a lock of hair off her face with the back of her hand.
“You know that formality isn’t necessary. You may call me Darken.”
Sitting back against a rock, Kahlan took a sip of her water, her penetrating gaze locked on him. “Do you really think that wise? We are political allies, nothing more. Such formality would be inappropriate.”
Darken just smirked as he settled himself in the grass. “We could be more. There is nothing stopping us.” He said as casually as if he had been discussing the weather.
That smirk on his lips drove her mad. She hated how he could just glance in her direction and her body would betray her. “Why would we be more? It serves no purpose.”
Shifting to sit beside her he leaned in, his hot breath against her ear as he whispered. “Just think about the pleasure we could share. Isn’t that purpose enough?”
“It wouldn’t be very professional.” She said almost as if she was trying to convince herself that they shouldn’t do this more than she was trying to convince him. She didn’t want him to think he held any power over her.
“You are the Mother Confessor and I am the Lord Rahl. I think we can say what is professional and what isn’t,” he said with his lips curling up into that signature smirk once more.
She couldn’t resist him and this was the perfect opportunity to do her duty. The line of Confessors needed to be continued. How powerful would a child of this union be? She would be a forced to be reckoned with. She leaned forward, her lips barely brushing against his. “You have a point, Lord Rahl. This would only strengthen our alliance.” With that she kissed him, her hand tangling in his long hair as she controlled the kiss. She was dominating, her tongue delving deep into his mouth. She was greedy having gone too long without this simple pleasure.
Darken was surprised by her forwardness but was soon growing accustomed to it. He let her have control, knowing soon enough he will be taking control and showing her who was really in charge of this relationship. He wanted her comfortable before he began exerting his control over her in the hopes she would let her guard down.
Her hands were moving under his shirt when they heard a twig snap as someone approached followed by someone clearing their throat. Kahlan looked over Darken’s shoulder at the source of the disturbance, glaring the moment her eyes locked on Cara. “What are you doing here?” she snapped, moving away from Rahl and straightening her dress as she did so.
“Richard sent me to find you both. Zedd got them out back from the other side and they have the Stone. We need to know where to head next.” She gave a disapproving look at Kahlan’s skirt hiked up around her knees and the way Rahl’s shirt was partially off of his muscular chest. “Don’t let Richard know what you two were going to do. I’d never hear the end of his whining.” With that Cara walked off hoping they would follow quickly. Now that they had the Stone there really was no time to waste.
It didn’t take Kahlan and Rahl long to rejoin the group, their clothes having been straightened before they stepped into the clearing. Richard and that other version of Kahlan were sitting huddled together on a log as they approached. The moment they were within earshot Richard was standing and crossing the camp to meet them. “We have the Stone. What do we do with it now? What was on the Scroll, Rahl?”
Rahl smirked and shook his head as he traced his lip with the pad of his index finger. “Everything will be reveled in time. For now we head south to the Pillars of Creation. That is all you need to know.”
“What do we do once we get there?”
Rahl smirked as he watched his younger brother fume. “If I told you then you wouldn’t need me. Self preservation, brother; it’s very important.”
Richard glared, he hated this but at least they knew where they were going. That was enough for now. They were one step closer to saving the world. “How long will it take to reach the Pillars?” He said as he turned towards Zedd.
“Two weeks if we go as fast as we can.” Zedd replied, not really paying attention to Richard. His eyes were locked on the Mother Confessor who appeared to be looking at Rahl with something akin to lust in her eyes. He was grateful her look had gone unnoticed by Richard. He knew no good would come from his knowledge.
“Then let’s get moving. We don’t have time to waste.”
As soon as the words left Richard’s mouth everyone began packing up their makeshift campsite, at least everyone but Zedd who quickly made his way over to the Mother Confessor and subtly pulled her to the side. “Kahlan what is going on with you and Rahl? This looks like more than an alliance.”
Kahlan just stood there and gave him a cold look, her gaze penetrating his very soul. “This is none of your concern, Zedd.”
“I’m afraid this is my concern, dear one. Are you seriously considering allowing Darken Rahl to father the next confessor?”
“He meets the qualifications.” Kahlan said in a completely monotone voice as if she didn’t care either way what the outcome of this discussion was.
“True, but Kahlan he can’t be confessed. You can’t trust him around the future line of confessors not to mention a child with both the Rahl blood and confessor magic would be unbelievably powerful.” The concern in Zedd’s voice was evident as he spoke, the fear of Darken Rahl corrupting any child Kahlan had with him a very real threat.
“That’s the whole point, Zedd. Our child would rule both lands someday. It’s ultimate power.” She smirked at him, seemingly pleased with his reaction. “I know what I’m doing. You have nothing to fear. Besides,” she said offhandedly, “he won’t live past her first birthday anyway.”
Zedd pondered what she had said for a few moments before speaking, his thumb and forefinger slowly stroking his chin whilst he watched her. “Is that even wise? Killing him after baring a child who could assume the throne? The D’Haran’s would revolt and you know it. You know their feelings towards Confessors.”
“I know what I am doing,” she said coolly before marching back into the clearing to collect her pack. They had no time for something as trivial as this. The rift needed to be sealed before anything else happened.

It took them a little over a week to reach the Pillars of Creation, much to the dismay of both Cara and Zedd who on numerous occasions happened upon Richard and his Kahlan as well as Rahl and the Mother Confessor in rather compromising positions. Cara had begun feeling rather left out by the whole arrangement.
The group arrived at the Pillars at dusk the night before the Summer Solstice only to be informed by Darken that there was nothing they could do until the next day. The Stone had to be placed a precisely the right time or else they would have come all this way for nothing. After dinner Cara stood watch, rolling her eyes as she watched Richard and Kahlan disappear behind some bushes. Zedd was sleeping soundly whilst Rahl and the Mother Confessor sat by the fire talking.
Even though neither couple had been truly together as far as Cara knew, someone always interrupting them, the tension and constant risk of stumbling across one or both couples had her completely on edge. Deciding that easing the tension was worth any risk she moved from her log on the edge of camp, quickly sitting next to Rahl, the warm glow of the fire flickering in her eyes. “I have a proposition for the two of you.”
Rahl tilted his head curiously and arched his eye brow while the Mother Confessor just took in Cara with her penetrating gaze, wondering what that woman could possibly offer that would be of use to her. “What is it, Cara?” Rahl said snapping Kahlan out of her thoughts just as quickly as she had gotten lost in them.
“I just thought it would be easier for us all if I didn’t have to stumble upon the two of you all the time.”
“It would be easier. You should just walk away instead of interrupting.” The Mother Confessor snapped at her, “Between you and Zedd it’s impossible to be alone.” Her lips twitched up into a small smile as Darken nodded in agreement.
“Or I could join you,” she said offhandedly, a smirk spreading on her lips. “I’m sure it would be pleasurable.”
“Now that’s not a bad idea,” Rahl said which earned him a hard smack from Kahlan. Even if she cared little for him she still didn’t want to share what was hers.
“That would serve no purpose for procreation. I am not sleeping with you.” She turned to Cara, her lips twitching up into a smirk. “Not to mention sex with me would mean your death. Think about that.”
Cara pondered the thought for a moment before rolling her eyes. “You wouldn’t be able to handle a Mord’Sith anyway.” With that she stalked off back to her log. Continuing to keep watch and trying her best to block out the moans of ecstasy that were drifting in through the trees from Richard and Kahlan’s little tryst. She needed to get away from all of this tension before she lost her mind.
It wasn’t long before Darken and Kahlan drifted to sleep and she was alone keeping watch. Cara nearly jumped out of her skin when Richard and Kahlan came stumbling back into camp, their clothes in disarray and their hair laden with leaves. She couldn’t help but smirk. “Have fun?”
Kahlan turned the moment she heard Cara, her face flushing pink with embarrassment. “I…”
“That’s none of your business, Cara,” Richard said quickly, coming to Kahlan’s rescue.
She just shook her head, quickly standing and closing the distance between them. “I could have made it more fun.” She said, reaching out to pluck a leaf from Richard’s hair and casually tossing it to the ground.
“I don’t think that is possible.” Richard murmured as he took Kahlan’s hand, his thumb brushing over the back of her hand. The smile that lit up her face warmed his heart.
Chucking softly, Cara crossed her arms over her breasts while she observed the happy couple. “Oh it’s possible. If I had joined you, that is.”
Immediately Kahlan shot her a glare that was one of the coldest she had ever seen. “We don’t need you!” Kahlan snapped as Richard’s arm snaked around her waist to reassure her that she was more than enough for him.
“It’s okay Cara. We don’t need any help with that sort of thing.” Richard said while Kahlan clung possessively to his side.
Cara just rolled her eyes. “Suit yourself but if you change your mind,” she said with a smirk, “you know where to find me.” With that she sauntered over to the edge of the clearing to keep watch. Those fools didn’t know what they were missing.
When morning came they packed up camp quickly for the trek up to the Pillars. Reaching the center of the Pillars of Creation just before midday, Richard placed the Stone in the center of the podium they stood before. It wasn’t long until the light of the noon sun filtered through the Stone in a kaleidoscope of light, sealing away the Keeper forever just like Darken had said it would. The world was safe again and they couldn’t believe it. Their quest was finally over. They could go back and live their lives now. Things seemed perfect.
