Richard listened as Kahlan sang to Renn, the soft melody soothing not only the Listener but him as well.  Kahlan’s voice helping to push everything from his mind except how beautiful Kahlan was.  He watched her, the firelight sparkling in her eyes as she sang her lullaby until Renn was sound asleep.  Just when he had thought she couldn’t be any more perfect, she proved him wrong.  He could only imagine what a wonderful mother she would be someday and how maybe, just maybe she would be the mother of his children.

Kahlan shifted closer towards him once Renn fell asleep, despite the voice in her head that told her not to.  She was still slightly upset by everything that had been brought up earlier and she wanted to feel safe.  When she was near Richard she always felt safe.  She couldn’t help but notice the large smile on his face and the far off look in his eyes.  She wondered what he was thinking.  Placing her hand on his shoulder and squeezing lightly, smiling at the way she made him jump.  “What were you thinking?”

Richard looked into her eyes as he recalled the beautiful thoughts she had interrupted.  He couldn’t tell her had been thinking of her; about marrying her and having a child with her.  He knew he shouldn’t have been thinking such thoughts but he couldn’t help it, the smile crept back onto his face imaging her holding their child.  “Just the future.”

Kahlan’s lips formed small smile as she tilted her head towards him, a curious glint in her eyes.  “What about?”

Richard sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair, not really comfortable with telling her what he had been thinking.  He knew if he wasn’t careful she would see right through him.  “I was just thinking about family; about how someday I’d like to see my family again.”  He desperately hoped his response was vague enough.  He didn’t want her to know his thoughts, at least not yet.  He had never been more grateful than in that moment that Renn was asleep.

“Oh.” Her mischievous smile faltered when he said that.  He didn’t want to be with them.  She sighed when it dawned on her that he had no reason to want to stay with them forever.  She should have realized he would leave when they defeated Darken Rahl.

Richard noticed her change in demeanor and wrapped his good arm around her, holding her close.  “I’m not going away, Kahlan.  You’ll always have me.”

His words rattled her to her core.  She now knew for sure that he had feelings for her and the emotions running through her at the realization confused her.  Biting her lower lip, thought about it, she was thrilled but at the same time it broke her heart.  There was nothing more she wanted even though it was just a hopeless fantasy.
