Kahlan awoke to the sound of her daughter’s delighted giggles as she ran into the room. “Mommy! It’s snowing!”
The look of wonder on Lucy’s face couldn’t help but make Kahlan smile. She turned away from her daughter who was climbing up onto the bed to look out the window. She saw the large flakes slowly falling in the morning light, Lucy had been right. It was the first snow of the season. “Then what are we doing inside? Do you want to go out in the snow, Lucy?”
“Can I?”
“Of course, but you need to get ready first. You can’t go outside in you night gown.” Lucy nodded enthusiastically as she bounded off the bed and out of the room to go change her clothes.
Kahlan dressed quickly knowing Lucy would be back any minute and want to go outside but she couldn’t stop herself from letting her mind wander to Richard and how he was missing his daughter’s excitement over the snowfall all because he was needed in D’Hara. She hated when he missed things but she knew it was necessary for peace. She just hoped he would be home before the snow in the mountains made the journey impossible.
She found Lucy in the hall outside her chambers, her mismatched clothing making it obvious she had dressed herself. Kahlan picked her up before they made their way to the garden. The snow was coming down in a light dusting. The large flakes drifting lazily back down to Earth.
Kahlan set Lucy down and she immediately was running around, trying to catch the snowflakes only for them to melt seconds after meeting the warmth of her skin. She chuckled at the look of disappointment on her daughter’s face as she knelt down next to her. “They are going to melt. Snow always melts.”
“Why?”
“Because the snowflakes need to stay cold or else they turn into water.”
The look of wonder on the four year olds face couldn’t help but make Kahlan smile. The large flakes sticking to her daughter’s long dark hair and clinging to the eyelashes the framed the chocolate orbs so like her father’s. She looked like a little snow princess. “There is a more fun way to catch snowflakes.”
Lucy looked at her mother curiously as Kahlan stuck her tongue out, tipping her head back in an attempt to catch a snowflake on her tongue. “See?”
Lucy giggled as she stuck out her tongue in the hopes of catching a snowflake just like her mommy. She caught several on her tongue, no longer upset they melted but excited they turned into water. “I did it.”
“Yes you did, sweetheart.”
Kahlan pulled Lucy into her arms and hugged her; she couldn’t help but wish Richard had been here to see this special morning.
“I can’t wait to show Daddy how to catch snowflakes.”
Kahlan couldn’t help but smile.
